Passive, 2 band valve equalizer

Description

Iron, Copper, Tungsten, Silicon, Glass, and high voltage electrons. Elemental.

Over two years in development, meet EVE. Our nickname for the Electronic Valve Equalizer. A two band, dual-mono, passive valve equalizer that will quickly become a mainstay in your rack for bus duties, or single tracks. But don’t make any assumptions from it’s appearance, EVE is anything but ordinary. It’s hard to argue that the coveted wideband, classic passive filter that inspired this design is nothing short of old-school perfection, but that’s about where the similarities end.

Let’s get the obvious out of the way. The EVE is sleek, it’s sexy, and it demands recognition in your rack. From it’s high gloss knobs, premium Grayhill frequency selectors, and NKK toggle switches, it’s built strong. We also offer this unit with stepped rotary switches, or smooth control pots. We like both for many different reasons.

2 bands of glory, an infinite world of tone shaping.
Eve Filters

We’ve taken a different approach to this classic filter, added some features, and stuffed it with premium NOS and modern production tone capacitors specifically selected for their sound within the spectrum.

From earth to air, and everything in between, not only can you shape your low and high frequencies, but taking the “subtractive eq” approach you can give your mid-range the same treatment. EVE showcases all of the low and high-end tricks by it’s ability to boost and attenuate overlapping frequencies. Just like the original unit that inspired this filter.

Frequency Selections

Low Boost/Attenuate: 100Hz, 60Hz, 30Hz, 20Hz

High Attenuate: 20kHz, 10kHz, 5kHz

Variable Width High Boost: 3kHz, 4kHz, 5kHz, 8kHz, 10kHz, 12kHz, 16kHz, and our own “Air” band. “Air” is centered outside of our range of hearing, but it’s wide curve bleeds into the audible range for that intangible angelic kiss from the heavens.

Elektrophonik Custom Inductors

We make our own precision multi-tap inductors. Why? Off the shelf inductors simply do not have the exacting tolerance we require. And since the inductors are truly what give us that high end sonic pleasure, we dare to be different. They also let us tailor our supersonic “Air” band.

See how we make them here!

EVE Inductor
A unique, multi-function valve stage, with all of the bells and whistles

What truly sets the EVE apart from others, is our unique valve and transformer gain stage. We wanted to create something to compliment the organic curves of the filter stage, but something also that is unique and multifunctional. This is what puts the EVE into it’s own category. We’ve cut no corners, and our custom output transformers made just for the EVE give us some additional tricks we wouldn’t be able to pull off otherwise.

EVE Valves

Valve Stage:

We started with a very different 12AX7 topology which provides most of the gain we need for the filters, and elegantly feeds the driver stage.

The driver stage is 100% high voltage, Class A push-pull, designed to plow some electrons. Yep you heard it, Class A, push-pull. Not to be confused with the often used class AB push-pull. How is it different? It eliminates undesirable distortion anomalies, adds some very desirable valve harmonic content, and gives you all of the tone you’d expect from a true class A design. However, this requires raw, unadulterated power.

We’re asking a lot from our Mullard 12AU7 output valves which provides all of the heavy lifting. They drive two complete peak to peak inverted signals into our custom output transformer which is made just for the EVE. We need some serious juice for this, and we found this valve in particular is the perfect compliment.

Multiple Operation Modes

Our custom output transformers give us the ability to pull off some very cool tonal tricks, which completely reshape the sonic response, and affect how the unit feels.

Normal Mode:

In normal mode, the frequency response of the EVE is stunningly flat from 9Hz to 40kHz. It gives you that hi-fi, high headroom, expensive valve sound. The perfect mode to use when you want to hear all of the micro dynamics, transients, and expansive sound of the filter.

THD Mode:

In THD mode, the frequency response of the EVE is drastically different and extends from 30Hz to 15kHz. It takes harshness out of overhyped material. It’s punchy, the mids are more prominent, and showcases the sound of pure transformer iron. The harmonic characteristic of the valves also change, which has a huge impact on how the filter section responds. The filters feel “squishier”. You can also drive the filter section much harder in this mode, giving you more of that delicious passive inductor tone. For when you want all of the color without the grit.
